Marriage is a contract between two persons. But even more than that, marriage is a "covenant" for a Christian. A "covenant" recognizes God as the third party in our union. Christ binds us in our pledge, and encourages us in our loving commitment.

The Book of Common Worship for the Presbyterian Church says this about marriage:

"God gave us marriage so that husband and wife may help and comfort each other, ...

God gave us marriage for the full expression of the love between a man and woman....

God gave us marriage for the well-being of human society, ...

God gave us marriage as a holy mystery in which a man and woman are joined together, and become one, just as Christ is one with the church.

In marriage, husband and wife are called to a new way of life, ...

We rejoice that marriage is given of God, blessed by our Lord Jesus Christ, and sustained by the Holy Spirit."

Your wedding day is the beginning of a wonderful venture. What begins as new love matures into a communion in the spirit of Christ, who works within the marriage relationship.
